How the games work

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Play on WELE's French sets, one for each level from A1 to B2. A1 and A2 are free. Each round deals about a dozen words you haven't seen lately.

  2. 2

    Play a quick round

A round takes a couple of minutes. Some games ask you to recognise a meaning, others make you type or spell the word from memory.

  3. 3

    Keep the words you missed

At the end you see the words worth another look. Sign up free and WELE puts them in your review, so they come back before you forget them.

Why games help words stick

Seeing a word once rarely makes it yours. What works is pulling it back out of memory, a little later each time. Every game here is built on that: the meaning shows and you find the word, or the word shows and you find the meaning.

The typing games go a step further. Recognising a word is easier than producing it, and spelling it out with a bit of time pressure is close to what writing and speaking ask of you.

Questions

Are the games free?
Yes. Every game is free to play in your browser, with no account needed.
Do I need an account?
No. You only need one to save the words you missed into your WELE review.
Which words are in the decks?
WELE's French sets: the most common words of the language, in four levels from A1 to B2. Each round picks a fresh sample, so the same game plays differently every time.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. The games work on phones and tablets. The typing games are easiest with a keyboard, but the on-screen one works too.
Can I play them instead of scrolling my feed?
Yes. The WELE browser extension can swap your Facebook, YouTube or TikTok feed for one quick round, then give the feed back.
